Having done 19 POTDs and selected hands for 40 of them, I have noticed a trend in the types of hands I've chosen to write about. I pick hands where I put too much money in the pot more often than hands where I don’t put enough money in the pot. I pick plays where the way I put too much money in the pot is by being too aggressive. Punt of the Day began as a private project; when playing poker, I’d note hands for review later. When I’d review a session, I’d crown one hand the Punt of the Day. I want this Substack to have a variety of hands from different venues and formats of poker, but also to focus on different types of pots. Nick Petrangelo nicknamed me “sticky fingers” because it’s hard to get me to fold a hand. I noticed that so far on this Substack, I’ve posted very few river calls. So I went digging into the archives to find a river call gone wrong. Today’s hand is from April 5th, 2020, a Sunday during COVID, but one that occurred before high stakes were fully booming. I did not play on GG and “only” paid $35k in buyins; I cashed for 1k (I collected some bounties in the Sunday Bounty Cooldown Turbo). Today’s hand is from a Pokerstars $5k, the biggest tournament of the day.
